Online tools for CJK languages

Welcome to waiyu.org, a free service hosted by the Open Systems Laboratory at Indiana University. Waiyu takes its name from the Chinese , which means ``foreign language''. You will find here useful tools for reading and writing CJK (Chinese, Japanese, Korean) languages.

So far, servers are available for Simplified Chinese (GB), Traditional Chinese (BIG5), and Japanese. Of these, the Simplified Chinese server is the most developed.

Using the Chinese GB server, you can:

Look up English words to find their Chinese equivalents (for example, welcome). Dictionary entries are sorted according to frequency of use. The server maintains a large library of Chinese documents which it updates daily from Chinese-language newspapers.
Look up Chinese words (for example, dianzi).
Look up entire English phrases (In Toronto today ...) or Chinese phrases ( kaifangshi xitong ...).
Surf the web in Chinese, with instant lookup of Chinese phrases in a frame or popup window. Click on the small + symbols to look up phrases.
Look up Chinese words or phrases by pinyin, with tones (wu2 xian4 dian4 hua4) or without tones (yu hang yuan).
Use Sentence Builder to construct Chinese sentences, using a mixture of English, pinyin and Chinese.

There is a mailing list for users of the waiyu.org servers and software. When the software is a bit more mature, the development mailing list will be open for business. The software is written and maintained by Todd Veldhuizen.

The servers use CEDICT, WordNet, and the libtabe tsi.src lexicon.
